U11s rocked at The Common

Stuart Emms

Rockhampton u11s (153-2) beat Hawkesbury u11s (133-5)

Hawkesbury’s winning run came to an end on Tuesday evening in soaring temperatures at the Common, with hosts Rockhampton taking the spoils.

Fielding a much changed side allowing all squad members a game, Hawkesbury were asked to field after the home side won the toss.

Coach Hopson rang the changes in both batting order and bowling; but the opening pair of Lewis Green (1-10) and Chloe Wallace (1-20) repaid his faith with a good start. Indeed, Chloe’s well judged caught and bowled capped a fine all round performance in the field for her with some exemplary ground fielding - an example to some of her team mates.

Pick of the Hawksbury bowlers was Archie Chappell who, though wicketless, conceded only 8 runs off his 3 overs with one maiden.

Charlie Emms (0-8) and Francis Hopson (0-10) kept the pressure on but Rockhampton didn’t concede another wicket and their final pair put on 48 (Finley 32*) off their last 4 overs to post a formidable total.

The left hand/right hand opening partnership of Sam Deacon (6*) & Ben Magrath (8) got Hawkesbury off to a steady start, consolidated by the second pairing of Green (8) and Kara Meehan (6*). Kara tied with Chloe’s earlier C&B for the game’s champagne moment with a beautiful four over extra cover – shot of the day!

Just behind the required rate, Hawkesbury made life more difficult for themselves by losing wickets at regular intervals including a couple of avoidable run outs. Against that, there was also evidence of more confidence in calling for and judging other opportunities to ‘steal’ runs.

The next pair of Emms (16*) and Hopson (14) gave the visitors added impetus and put on 40 in their allotted overs, peppered with some nice boundaries.

Final pair Wallace (6) and Chappell (6*) had lot to do to secure a third consecutive win but gave it a good go in the face of some very accurate bowling.

Hawkesbury fell short but it was another lovely evening in the sunshine seeing the club’s future stars continue to develop their skills.
